Home Sweet Home

Happy 2014!

Our plan was to publish new blog posts as our trip was happening but due to our poor planning, we didn't bring a device that had a SD card reader to upload photos =(

So we are back now back in Toronto (well technically Norm is back in Ottawa). Even though it is high of -17 today, we are very glad to be back home. Our trip was amazing but it was definitely the most grueling trip we've had so far.

Before posting the individual day posts we are summarizing our trip into one post for those who do no want to go through the detailed posts.

During our 21 day trip we:

  1. Visited 3 countries (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia) and 6 cities (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Phnom Penh, Siem Reap).
  2. Took 11 flights for a total of 56.25 hours, which doesn't include time spent during layovers.
  3. Probably woke up every day before 8am, including once at 4am and many times between 5:30am-6:30am.
  4. Got food poisoning once in Hanoi but we aren't sure if it was from food in Chiang Mai or Hanoi that got us sick.
  5. Realized how safe drivers are in North America compared to South East Asia. We basically risked our lives every time we crossed a street. Also, very few cars are equipped with a seat belt. Even if there is one, no one uses them.
  6. Noticed that 75% of young girls in Bangkok have fake braces. I fit right in =)
  7. Barely saw any locals in the three countries wear prescription glasses. Either everyone has perfect sight or they can't afford it. Makes it even more dangerous to cross the road =P
  8. Noticed that most locals were very friendly even though we got scammed a couple of times
  9. Learned that we are very lucky to live in North America
